A notable characteristic of this mineral is its strong pleochroism, or color changing ability. When viewed from one direction, the crystal appears yellow to light blue but when rotated the color will appear blue or blue-violet. It is named after the French mining engineer and geologist, Pierre Louis Antoine Cordier, who first studied the species.
